Jung Perchard was a gift to the Prince of Wales, Edward VII, who had encountered him during his shooting expeditions in India twenty years prior in 1876. At the time, Jung Perchard was a much smaller elephant, but he grew to become a beloved attraction at the Regent's Park Zoo, providing countless youngsters with memorable rides on his back. The image showcases Jung Perchard in his enclosure, surrounded by curious onlookers, including a keeper, who seems to be directing the crowd. The elephant's powerful and regal demeanor is evident, despite the confines of his captive environment. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, when exotic animals from far-off lands were brought to Europe for public display, and the fascination with the Asiatic elephant was at its peak. The 1890s were an era of great interest in zoos and their inhabitants, and the London Zoological Society played a significant role in importing and showcasing a diverse range of animals from around the world. Jung Perchard's story is a testament to the enduring fascination with these magnificent creatures and the impact they had on the public's imagination during the 19th century.
