EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph depicts the Itelmen people of the Kamchatka Peninsula, a indigenous ethnic group residing in the Pacific coastal region of Russia. The Itelmen, also known as the Kamtchatkales or Kamchadals, have a rich cultural heritage that has been influenced by their unique environment and historical interactions with other ethnic groups. The image captures the physiognomy of a man, woman, and child, each dressed in traditional Itelmen attire. The man wears a fur coat, likely made from local animals such as sea otters or seals, and lined clothes to protect against the harsh climate. His head is adorned with a headdress made of feathers and animal bones. The woman, wearing a long, fur-lined parka, holds a child in her arms. The child, bundled up in fur clothing, gazes curiously at the viewer. The Itelmen people have a strong connection to the land and the sea, and their customs and costumes reflect this relationship. They were skilled hunters, fishers, and gatherers, and their traditional economy was based on subsistence activities. The Itelmen also had complex social structures and a rich oral tradition, with stories and myths passed down through generations. This lithograph is from Friedrich Wilhelm Goedsche's Complete Gallery of Peoples in True Pictures, published in Meissen, Germany, circa 1835-1840. Goedsche's ethnographic work was part of a larger European trend of documenting and categorizing the physical and cultural differences of various peoples around the world. This image offers a glimpse into the lives of the Itelmen people at a time when their traditional way of life was beginning to be transformed by contact with European explorers and settlers.
