EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 495, featuring the Ringed China-mark Butterfly, Hydrocampa stratiota, now known as Parapoynx stratiotata. The Lepidopteran species is depicted gracefully perched atop a leaf of the Yellow Water-lily, Nuphar lutea. The plate, published between 1824 and 1839, is an exquisite example of the meticulous detail and accuracy that characterized the works of John Curtis FLS (Fellow of the Linnean Society). The Ringed China-mark Butterfly is a medium-sized moth with a wingspan of approximately 3.5 centimeters. The forewings are adorned with a series of irregular, wavy, white lines, interspersed with black spots, giving the insect its distinctive appearance. The hindwings are uniformly brown with a pale edge. The species is native to Europe and Asia, and can be found near water sources, particularly in ponds and marshes. The Yellow Water-lily, Nuphar lutea, is a beautiful aquatic plant that thrives in shallow, nutrient-rich waters. Its large, circular leaves provide a perfect platform for the Ringed China-mark Butterfly to rest and feed on the nectar of various flowers. The plant's vibrant yellow color adds a touch of warmth and life to the image, complementing the intricate details of the butterfly. This stunning plate is a testament to the natural beauty and diversity of the Lepidoptera order and the dedication of naturalists like John Curtis in documenting and preserving their findings for future generations. The intricate details of the butterfly's wings and the delicate folds of its body are rendered with remarkable precision, providing a window into the natural world of the 1820s and 1830s.
