This handcoloured steel engraving, created by John Leech and published by Bradbury, Agnew & Co. in 1880, depicts a pivotal moment in English history: Oliver Cromwell's dissolution of the Rump Parliament in 1653. The historical context of this scene is the English Civil War, which began in 1642 when King Charles I raised his standard at Nottingham, leading to a series of battles between the Parliamentarians (Roundheads) and the Royalists.
