EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the serene beauty of the Bani River, the principal tributary of the Niger River in Mali, circa 1907. The Bani River, a major waterway in West Africa, is a lifeline for the local communities, providing them with water for agriculture and transportation. In the foreground of the photograph, a covered dugout canoe rests on the riverbank. The canoe, a traditional mode of transportation in the region, is being prepared for a journey upstream. The canoe is expertly crafted from a single tree trunk, skillfully hollowed out to create a watertight vessel. The cover, made from woven reeds or animal hides, protects the passengers and cargo from the elements. The canoeist, standing at the prow of the boat, readies himself to pole the canoe using a long pole. The pole, also made from a tree trunk, is used to propel the canoe through the water. The pole is inserted into the riverbed and pushed against the riverbed to move the canoe forward. This method of transportation, known as poling or punting, is still used in many parts of West Africa today. The French colonial flag, fluttering in the background, is a reminder of the region's complex history. The French colonized Mali, then known as French Sudan, from the late 19th century until Mali gained its independence in 1960. The French colonial administration brought significant changes to the region, including the introduction of new technologies and infrastructure, but also disrupted traditional ways of life. Despite the passage of time and the many changes that have occurred in the region, the Bani River and its tributaries remain an essential part of the Malian landscape and the daily lives of its people.
