Homo heidelbergensis reconstruction

Homo heidelbergensis reconstruction. Reconstruction of a Homo heidelbergensis head from skull 5 (Miguelon) found at Sima de los Huesos (Pit of Bones). This is the best preserved skull known world-wide. It has a capacity of 1125 cubic centimetres making it the smallest skull of European Pleistocene man. There is debate over whether the fossils should be attributed to H. heidelbergensis or H. neanderthalensis, as some anatomical features are transitional between the two species. Sima de los Huesos is one of several sites in Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain, that have been studied on and off over the past century, leading to a massive advancement in the understanding of human evolution. In 2000, Sierra de Atapuerca was made a world heritage site by UNESCO

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a meticulous reconstruction of Homo heidelbergensis, an ancient human ancestor. The reconstructed head is based on the remarkably well-preserved skull known as Miguelon, discovered at Sima de los Huesos (Pit of Bones) in Spain. With a cranial capacity of 1125 cubic centimeters, this skull stands out as the smallest among European Pleistocene humans. The debate surrounding these fossils lies in their attribution to either H. heidelbergensis or H. neanderthalensis, as certain anatomical features display transitional characteristics between the two species. Sima de los Huesos is part of Sierra de Atapuerca, a significant archaeological site that has contributed immensely to our understanding of human evolution over the past century. In recognition of its scientific importance and historical significance, UNESCO designated Sierra de Atapuerca as a world heritage site in 2000. This photograph not only offers us a glimpse into our prehistoric past but also highlights the advancements made in anthropology and paleontology through extensive research conducted at this remarkable location. Displayed against a striking black background, this image allows us to appreciate the intricate details captured by the reconstruction artist. It serves as a testament to our relentless pursuit of knowledge about our origins and provides an opportunity for contemplation on how far we have come along the fascinating journey called human evolution.
