Liver cells, light micrograph

Liver cells. Light micrograph of a section through a human liver. The liver cells are pink with purple nuclei. A duct canal and its surrounding tissue can be seen at lower left. The liver has many functions, including destroying old red blood cells, producing bile for the digestion of fat in the digestive system, breaking down harmful waste products in the blood, and converting some of the blood chemicals into stored food (glycogen) and proteins. Blood arrives by the hepatic artery and the portal vein, and is removed to the heart by the inferior vena cava. The liver is among the largest organs of the body. Periodic acid-schiff (PAS) stain. Magnification: x570 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of liver cells, captured under a light microscope. The pink hue of the liver cells contrasts with their purple nuclei, creating a visually striking image. In the lower left corner, we can observe a duct canal and its surrounding tissue, adding depth to the composition. The human liver is an organ that performs numerous vital functions for our body. It acts as a powerhouse by destroying old red blood cells and producing bile necessary for fat digestion in the digestive system. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in breaking down harmful waste products present in our bloodstream. Moreover, this remarkable organ converts certain chemicals found in our blood into stored food called glycogen and proteins essential for various bodily processes. Blood arrives at the liver through both the hepatic artery and portal vein while being removed from it via the inferior vena cava on its way back to the heart. With its significant size making it one of the largest organs within our body, this micrograph provides us with an up-close look at these hepatocytes - specialized liver cells responsible for performing these critical tasks. Displayed using periodic acid-schiff (PAS) stain technique and printed at 10 centimeters wide with a magnification of x570, this print serves as an awe-inspiring reminder of nature's complexity and elegance within ourselves.
