Phrenology busts

Phrenology busts, side view. Phrenology was a popular pseudoscience of the nineteenth century. The basis for the theory lay in a misplaced belief that a persons character and mental faculties effected the shape of their head. It was thought that this was because the skull became modified over the different functional areas of the cortex of the brain. Practitioners of the technique claimed that they could read a person, that is assess their personality, by feeling the bumps on their head. In this bust, a wide range of personality traits are mapped across the various bones that comprise the skull. Busts by L.N. Fowler

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of Phrenology busts, providing a side view of these intriguing artifacts from the 19th century. Phrenology, although now considered pseudoscience, was once a popular belief system that linked a person's character and mental faculties to the shape of their head. The theory suggested that different areas of the brain's cortex could modify the skull, leading practitioners to claim they could assess an individual's personality by feeling the bumps on their cranium. In this particular bust, created by L. N. Fowler, a wide range of personality traits are meticulously mapped across various bones comprising the skull. This historical technique served as a diagnostic tool in its time and is now seen as an example of quackery or charlatanism within medicine. The ceramic models depicted in this image offer us insight into the mindset and practices prevalent during the 1800s. They serve as reminders of how medical understanding has evolved over time and highlight our fascination with unraveling human nature through unconventional means. Mark M Sykes skillfully captures both the intricate details and historical significance behind these phrenological busts in his photography. Through his lens, we are transported back to an era where bump reading held sway over scientific thought - reminding us how far we have come in our quest for understanding ourselves.
