EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho, showcases three prominent actors of Japan's Edo period in the mid-18th century: Ichikawa Komazo II as Minamoto no Yorimasa, Matsumoto Koshiro II as Osada no Taro Kagemune disguised as Yatsurugi Zaemon, and Ichikawa Danzo III as I no Hayata Tadazumi. The trio is depicted in the play "Nue no Mori Ichiyo no Mato," which was performed at the Nakamura Theater in the eleventh month of 1770. Ichikawa Komazo II, portrayed on the right, dons the beige and green apparel of Minamoto no Yorimasa, a legendary samurai known for his valor and loyalty. His costume includes a sword and a dagger, symbolizing his warrior status. Matsumoto Koshiro II, in the center, disguises himself as Yatsurugi Zaemon, Osada no Taro Kagemune, wearing a green costume with a distinctive hat. The concept of disguise was a common theme in Kabuki theater, adding an element of surprise and intrigue to the performances. Ichikawa Danzo III, on the left, portrays I no Hayata Tadazumi, wearing a simple beige outfit. The trio's contrasting colors and costumes highlight their individual characters and add visual interest to the print. This stunning work of art is an excellent representation of the artistic school of Bando Jiro Saburo and the fashion of the time. It is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Japan and the importance of Kabuki theater in the Edo period. The print is a valuable addition to any collection of Asian art or art history.
