This diptych print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho in the late 18th century, showcases two prominent Kabuki actors of the Edo period: Segawa Kikunojo III as Aigo no Waka on the right, and Ichikawa Yaozo II as Hachio-mara Aratora on the left. The scene is taken from the play "Chigo Sakura Jusan Kane," performed at the Ichimura Theater in the eleventh month of 1774. Aigo no Waka, dressed in a beige and brown hosoban kimono, exudes an air of elegance and refinement. His long, flowing sleeves are adorned with intricate patterns, and his hair is styled in the traditional topknot. In one hand, he holds a katana, its blade gleaming menacingly. His intense gaze and serious expression convey the gravity of the role he is playing. On the left, Ichikawa Yaozo II, dressed as Hachio-mara Aratora, dons a vibrant, colorful kimono with bold patterns. His makeup and wig are expertly applied to portray a female character, a common practice in Kabuki theater known as onnagata. He holds a fan in one hand and a fan-shaped parasol in the other, adding to the feminine appearance of the character. The print is a testament to the artistic school of Katsukawa, particularly the Katsukawa Shunsho, and showcases the intricacies of color woodblock printing. The attention to detail in the actors' apparel, makeup, and facial expressions is awe-inspiring, transporting us back to the world of Kabuki theater in 18th century Japan.
