This evocative 16th century painting, created by Cornelius Engebrechtsz around 1505-1510, captures the poignant scene of Christ's crucifixion with the sorrowful presence of His mother, the Virgin Mary, and the beloved apostles John and St. John the Evangelist. The tender gaze of Mary, depicted here as the "Mater Dolorosa," or "Mother of Sorrows," is fixed on her crucified Son, her heart pierced by a sword of sorrow. St. John, the apostle and evangelist, often referred to as "the Beloved Disciple," leans in to comfort Mary Magdalene, who weeps at the foot of the cross. The inclusion of Sts.
