Inhabitants of the Country of the Chukchis, Northeast Coast of Asia, 19th century. Creators: Alexander Postels, Godefroy Engelmann

Inhabitants of the Country of the Chukchis, Northeast Coast of Asia, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
Inhabitants of the Country of the Chukchis, Northeast Coast of Asia, 19th century. This black and white lithograph, created by Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann, offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Chukchi people during the 19th century. Part of a collection of 65 lithographs published after the round-the-world voyage commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I in 1826-29, this particular print showcases one aspect of the expedition's findings. Led by Captain Fedor Litke, the corvette Seniavin embarked on an ambitious journey that took them from Kronstadt to Cape Horn and eventually to the Pacific Ocean. The image depicts four individuals from the Chukchi community dressed in their traditional clothing. Their attire reflects both practicality and cultural significance as they navigate their harsh environment. The attention to detail in this lithographic representation allows us to appreciate not only their unique fashion choices but also gain insights into their way of life. This artwork serves as a valuable anthropological record capturing an important moment in history when Russian scientific naval surveys were prevalent. It provides us with a visual window into a world that may otherwise have been lost to time. Preserved within Library of Congress' Congressional Library archives, this lithograph is part of our shared heritage art collection. Its presence here reminds us not only of our collective human history but also encourages further exploration and understanding between different cultures. As we gaze upon these inhabitants from another era captured through Alexander Postels' skilled hand and Godefroy Engelmann's masterful lithography technique, we are reminded once again how art can bridge gaps across time and space.
