Old Houses, Moorfields, 1858. Creator: Unknown
Old Houses, Moorfields, [London], 1858. The picturesque ornamentation in the front of the house shown in the Engraving is probably of the date of the latter part of the reign of Henry VIII. and was much used in London during that and the three succeeding reigns...In the reigns of Charles I. and II. plaster patterns of greater beauty and more refinement were much used in the better class of houses, and harmonised well with the elaborately carved woodwork which was then in fashion. Most of these ceilings have now been removed ; the exterior scroll-work even on the house in Moor-fields has altogether disappeared, and a hostelry, made splendid with plate-glass, brass-work, and Grecian capitals, has supplied the place of the unassuming entrance which was formerly here; and so great is the change that, although the old frame remains behind, it would puzzle a good antiquary to recognise an ancient house with such a new face...From an examination of this neighbourhood it seems evident that this row of houses formerly looked into the fields'. Old Houses, Moorfields, 1858
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photographic print of a row of old houses located in Moorfields, London. The image, created in 1858 by an unknown artist, offers a glimpse into the rich history and architectural evolution of this area. The houses depicted in the print showcase intricate ornamentation in their facades, believed to date back to the latter part of Henry VIII's reign. These decorative elements were popular during this period and continued to be used in London through the reigns of the following monarchs. However, by the time this photograph was taken, many of these plaster patterns had been removed, replaced by more modern and ornate designs. The house in the foreground of the print once boasted an unassuming entrance, which has now been transformed into a grand hostelry adorned with plate-glass, brass-work, and Grecian capitals. The exterior scroll-work, a characteristic feature of these old houses, has completely vanished. The change is so significant that it would be challenging for even a skilled antiquary to recognize the ancient house with its new facade. A closer examination of this neighborhood reveals that these houses once overlooked open fields. The transformation of the area from rural landscapes to urban development is evident in this photograph, highlighting the passage of time and the ever-changing cityscape of London. This photograph is an essential record of London's architectural history, offering a glimpse into the past and reminding us of the evolution of the city's built environment. Despite the loss of many original features, the old frames of these houses remain, serving as a testament to their storied past.
