Osborne House at the time of Victoria, (1901). Creator: Unknown

Osborne House at the time of Victoria, (1901). View of Osborne House near East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought Osborne and its estate in 1845. In 1848, the old house was demolished to make way for a new three-storey pavilion with flagtower, designed in the style of an Italian Renaissance palazzo and built by Thomas Cubitt. It was used as a summer home and rural retreat by the royal family. From " The Illustrated London News Record of the Glorious Reign of Queen Victoria 1837-1901: The Life and Accession of King Edward VII. and the Life of Queen Alexandra". [London, 1901]

The image showcases the magnificent view of this iconic royal residence, nestled near East Cowes on the picturesque Isle of Wight in England. Originally purchased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1845, Osborne House underwent a transformation under their patronage. In 1848, the old house was demolished to make way for a new three-storey pavilion with a flagtower, designed in an elegant Italian Renaissance palazzo style by Thomas Cubitt. Its architectural splendor is evident in this photograph; its imposing presence against the landscape exudes regality and sophistication. The image is sourced from "The Illustrated London News Record of the Glorious Reign of Queen Victoria 1837-1901: The Life and Accession of King Edward VII. and the Life of Queen Alexandra" published in London in 1901.
