Peace Comes to Town, 1913. A figure of a knight, representing Sir Edward Grey (lst Viscount of Fallodon), British Foreign Secretary 1905-1916 carries the figure of Peace on his horse to the London Conference to end the First Balkan War, fought between Turkey and the Balkan League, consisting of Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia and Montenegro. The war restarted only a month after the signing in London in December 1912 of an armistice to end hostilities. Peace Comes to Town, 1913 - A Symbolic Journey Towards Resolution
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print titled "Peace Comes to Town, 1913" by Leonard Raven-Hill captures a significant moment in history. The image portrays Sir Edward Grey, the British Foreign Secretary during the early 20th century, riding on horseback as a knight carrying the allegorical figure of Peace. This scene represents Grey's role in bringing peace to London Conference and ending the First Balkan War. The artwork reflects the turbulent times of warfare and political negotiations that plagued Europe at that time. Despite an armistice signed just a month prior, hostilities had resumed between Turkey and the Balkan League consisting of Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, and Montenegro. In this context, Grey's mission was crucial for restoring harmony. The cartoon-like illustration adds a touch of humor with its accompanying saying about sitting close to avoid slipping off during their journey together. It showcases both creativity and symbolism prevalent in political cartoons from that era. Through this powerful visual representation captured in engraving style, we witness not only an important historical event but also gain insight into how art can convey complex ideas effectively.
