EDITORS COMMENTS
Plague Victims Pleading for Help from Christ, the Virgin, and Saint Roch" is a poignant and powerful drawing by the 16th century Italian artist Lattanzio Gambara. The work, created between 1567 and 1573, is a testament to the human spirit's unwavering faith and hope in the face of unimaginable suffering. The image depicts a group of plague victims, their gaunt faces etched with despair, pleading for mercy and relief from the Holy Trinity - Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Roch. The central figure is Christ, shown as the Antiphonetes, or the Healer, extending his hand in a gesture of compassion and healing. To his right, the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, gazes down upon the suffering with a tender and loving expression. Saint Roch, the patron saint of the plague, is depicted on the left, his hand raised in blessing and protection. The drawing is executed in black chalk, brown ink, and brown wash, heightened with white gouache. The use of color is minimal, yet effective, adding depth and contrast to the image. The figures are drawn with a remarkable degree of detail and emotion, their expressions and postures conveying the desperation and hopelessness of the plague victims. The drawing is believed to have been created during the Great Plague of Milan, which ravaged the city between 1563 and 1565, killing an estimated 25,000 people. The image serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of the disease on communities and the importance of faith and hope in times of crisis. Despite the drawing's somber subject matter, it is also a beautiful work of art, showcasing the artistic skill and emotional depth of Lattanzio Gambara. The drawing is now a valuable part of the artistic and cultural heritage of Italy and a testament to the enduring power of faith and hope in the face of adversity.
