EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving showcases the distinguished figure of Henry Wager Halleck (1815-1872), an American Civil War Union general, scholar, and lawyer. Born in New York City, Halleck's impressive career began with a legal education at Litchfield Law School and a brief stint as a lawyer. However, his passion for military strategy and tactics led him to join the United States Army. During the Mexican-American War, Halleck's strategic acumen was evident as he played a crucial role in the siege of Veracruz and the capture of Mexico City. His successes earned him the rank of brevet brigadier general. When the American Civil War broke out, Halleck was appointed as a major general and given command of the Department of Missouri. He played a significant role in the Battle of Shiloh, where he was criticized for his handling of the initial Confederate attack. Despite this, Halleck's strategic planning proved invaluable during the Siege of Corinth, which ultimately led to a Union victory. This portrait, painted by Alonzo Chappel and engraved in 1892, beautifully captures the character and presence of this remarkable American personage. The rich colors and intricate details bring Halleck's image to life, transporting us back to the pivotal moments of the Western Theater of the American Civil War. Halleck's enduring legacy as a scholar, lawyer, and military leader continues to resonate in the annals of American history.
