EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the determined spirit of Alfred E. Smith, the charismatic Governor of New York, during his unsuccessful campaign against Herbert Hoover in the US Presidential Elections of 1928. Smith, born in 1873, is seen here with his beloved wife, Eleanor, as they brave the elements during a campaign stop. Smith's signature cloche hat shields him from the rain, while his wife dons a stylish fur coat and a bowtie adorns his collar. Smith's campaign was marked by his progressive policies and his ability to connect with the common man. He was the first Catholic to be nominated by a major political party in the United States, and his faith became a contentious issue during the election. Despite these challenges, Smith ran a spirited campaign, traveling extensively throughout the country to rally support. Unfortunately, Smith was ultimately unsuccessful in his bid for the presidency. Hoover won the election with a decisive victory, but Smith's campaign laid the groundwork for future Democratic successes. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Smith's tenacity and the historical significance of his campaign.
