Sphinx and pyramids, Giza Necropolis, Egypt. These 26th-century BC structures are made from limestone, with granite also used in the pyramids (tombs for the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt). At left is the pyramid of the pharaoh Khafre. The Great Sphinx, dating to the same period, is a statue of a mythical creature with the face of a man and the body of a lion. Carved out of the surrounding bedrock, it has a height of 20 metres. The lower portions of the Great Sphinx, covered by desert sands, were excavated several times in the 19th century. This print takes us back to the ancient wonders of Egypt in the 1850s. Standing proudly against a backdrop of sandy desert, we are presented with two iconic structures that have fascinated explorers, historians, and tourists for centuries. To the left, we see the magnificent pyramid of Pharaoh Khafre reaching an impressive height of 143 meters. Constructed from limestone with touches of granite, this monumental tomb served as a final resting place for one of Ancient Egypt's powerful rulers. Dominating the foreground is the enigmatic Great Sphinx, dating back to the same period as Khafre's pyramid. This mythical creature boasts a human face and a lion's body skillfully carved out of surrounding bedrock. With its colossal size standing at 20 meters tall, it exudes an aura of mystery and awe. The lower portions of this majestic statue were uncovered multiple times during excavations in the 19th century after being buried beneath layers of desert sands. Such discoveries only added to its allure and sparked further exploration into Egyptian history.
