Bird eye anatomy, artwork

Bird eye anatomy, artwork. The structure of a birds eye is similar to that of humans and other vertebrates, with a clear cornea forming a bulge (left) in front of the lens (oval). Some birds have an additional set of muscles that can be used to change the shape of the cornea. The layers of the eyeball (yellow) are the retina (inner), choroid (middle) and sclera (outer). The structure unique to birds (and some reptiles) is the pecten (square, yellow, lower right). This is a projection of the choroid into the inside of the eyeball at the point where the optic nerve meets the eyeball. The pecten is thought to help nourish the retina

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the intricate anatomy of a bird's eye, shedding light on its remarkable similarities to human and other vertebrate eyes. Against a pristine white background, this print reveals the various components that make up this fascinating organ. At first glance, one cannot help but notice the clear cornea protruding in front of the oval-shaped lens. Interestingly, some avian species possess an additional set of muscles capable of altering the shape of their cornea. The layers comprising the eyeball – retina (inner), choroid (middle), and sclera (outer) – are depicted in vibrant yellow hues. However, what truly sets birds apart is their unique structure known as the pecten. Located at the meeting point between the optic nerve and eyeball, this square-shaped projection extends from the choroid into the interior of their eye. Scientists believe that this specialized feature plays a crucial role in nourishing their retina. Claus Lunau's meticulous illustration provides an invaluable insight into avian biology and ornithology. With its precise cross-section view and detailed cut-outs, it offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate nature's marvels up close. Delving into ophthalmology and zoological realms alike, this artwork beautifully captures both scientific accuracy and artistic brilliance.
