Lampbrush chromosomes, TEM

Lampbrush chromosomes. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of lampbrush chromosomes (LBCs). A chromosome consists of proteins and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA contains sections (genes) that encode the cells structure and function. LBCs are found inside amphibian and bird oocytes (immature egg cells). They are known as giant (polytene) chromosomes, as they undergo repeated replications of DNA without nuclear divisions, creating elongated strands. These strands consist of a main axis, around which there are many brush-like loops. These loops allows the genes to be easily transcribed (processed) while the oocyte develops into a mature ovum (egg). LBCs are ideal models for exploring how chromosomes function due to their large size and open structure

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of lampbrush chromosomes, as captured through a coloured transmission electron microscope (TEM). Lampbrush chromosomes are giant (polytene) chromosomes found within amphibian and bird oocytes, which are immature egg cells. Unlike regular chromosomes, lampbrush chromosomes undergo repeated DNA replications without nuclear divisions, resulting in elongated strands. The main axis of these strands is adorned with numerous brush-like loops that play a crucial role in facilitating gene transcription during the maturation of the oocyte into a mature ovum. This unique structure allows for easy processing of genes responsible for encoding cellular structure and function. Lampbrush chromosomes serve as ideal models for studying chromosome functionality due to their large size and open structure. They provide valuable insights into how genetic material is organized and regulated within animal cells. In this false-coloured micrograph, we can appreciate the vibrant hues that highlight different components such as proteins and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The image offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of cell biology, genetics, and biochemistry. It reminds us of the complex mechanisms at work within living organisms while also showcasing the inherent beauty found in scientific exploration.
