Monkeypox virus particles, TEM C016 / 7386

Monkeypox virus (MPV) particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Each particle is composed of a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) genome surrounded by a protein coat and lipid envelope. This virus, which is found near rainforests in Central and West Africa causes disease in humans and monkeys, although its natural hosts are rodents. It is capable of human to human transmission. In humans it causes fever, swollen glands and a rash of fluid-filled blisters. It is fatal in 10 per cent of cases. Magnification: x93, 000 when printed at 10 centimetres tall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and deadly Monkeypox virus particles, as captured by a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The coloured image reveals each particle's composition, consisting of a DNA genome enveloped by a protein coat and lipid envelope. While this virus is typically found in the vicinity of rainforests in Central and West Africa, it can cause severe illness in both humans and monkeys, despite its natural hosts being rodents. Monkeypox possesses the alarming ability to transmit from human to human, making it even more concerning for public health. In infected individuals, symptoms include fever, swollen glands, and a rash characterized by fluid-filled blisters. Tragically, approximately 10 percent of cases result in fatality. With an impressive magnification level of x93,000 when printed at just 10 centimeters tall, this image allows us to appreciate the microscopic world that exists within our environment. Its vibrant colors highlight the biological nature of this pathogenic microbe while emphasizing its significance within virology and microbiology fields. The Monkeypox virus belongs to the Orthopoxvirus family—a group 1 double-stranded DNA virus—and falls under zoonotic diseases due to its ability to jump between species. This photograph serves as a reminder of emerging infectious diseases that pose threats not only to wildlife but also potentially devastating consequences for human populations worldwide.
