European Lobster Collection

The European Lobster (Homarus gammarus) is a species of crustacean found in the North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea and can grow to over 60cm in length and weigh up to 6kg. The body is typically dark blue-green with yellow spots, while the claws are red-orange. The European Lobster is an omnivore, feeding on molluscs, worms, crustaceans and other small animals. It also scavenges for food on the sea floor. Breeding occurs between May and August when females lay thousands of eggs which attach to their pleopods until they hatch into larvae after about three weeks. The larvae then drift with ocean currents before settling on the seabed as juveniles after several months. This species has been heavily fished since ancient times but its population remains stable due to conservation efforts in some countries such as Norway where it is a protected species.
