Measuring at a modest 15.1x10.6 cm, this artwork holds immense beauty within its small frame. Lady Mary Bennet, daughter of the Earl of Tankerville and resident of Chillingham Castle in Northumberland, showcases her exceptional talent for drawing in this piece. Under the guidance of renowned London artist John Varley, Lady Mary honed her skills as an upper-class lady during that era. During a memorable journey through Scotland's rugged landscapes alongside her brother in 1826, Lady Mary meticulously sketched scenes that would later inspire this breathtaking watercolour view.
