Lady Mary Bennet was the daughter of the Earl of Tankerville, and lived at Chillingham Castle, Northumberland. She was taught drawing by the London artist John Varley. Sketching ability was considered to be an important social skill for young upper-class ladies. She painted this watercolour view from sketches made during a tour of the Highlands of Scotland with her brother in 1826. Scottish landscape became popular after the Picturesque style of wild, rugged landscape views became established in the late-18th century.
