EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho in the late 18th century, showcases two of the most celebrated Kabuki actors of the Edo period: Ichikawa Danjuro V as Momonoi Wakasanosuke (right) and Nakamura Nakazo I as Kakogawa Honzo (left). The scene is taken from the famous play "Kanadehon Chushingura," performed at the Nakamura Theater in the fifth month of 1771. Danjuro V, dressed in a striking green costume, portrays Momonoi Wakasanosuke, a councillor who is a member of the 47 Ronin. His elegant attire, featuring a wide-sleeved robe and a sash tied around his waist, highlights his refined and noble character. Nakamura Nakazo I, on the left, embodies the role of Kakogawa Honzo, a loyal retainer of Lord Asano. His simple yet elegant clothing, composed of a dark robe and a plain sash, emphasizes his dedication and devotion to his lord. The vibrant green color dominating the print signifies new beginnings and growth, symbolizing the rebirth of the 47 Ronin's quest for justice and vengeance. This exquisite work of art is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Japan and the enduring legacy of its theatrical traditions.
