This diptych, part of the artist's "A New Selection of Eastern Brocade Pictures," tells a timeless love story set against the backdrop of the Meiji Era (1868-1912) in Japan. The print depicts Lady Ejima, an aristocratic noblewoman, standing at the entrance of Chiyoda Castle, clad in an elegant kimono adorned with intricate patterns. Ikushima Shingoro, a humble actor, and Lady Ejima, a noblewoman, could only meet in secret, often exchanging glances from their respective castles. Their love story, filled with longing and desire, is immortalized in this stunning woodblock print. This masterpiece, with its rich colors and intricate details, is a testament to the artistic heritage of Japan during the Meiji Era.
