Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Karlis Huns in 1862, showcases a group of Izhorian Finns residing in the St. Petersburg province of the Russian Empire. The Izhorians, also known as the Ingrians or the Votyaks, were an indigenous Finno-Ugric people inhabiting the region along the Neva River and the Gulf of Finland. This image is part of the ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia, a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862, marking the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire. The work, titled "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," was dedicated to Tsar Alexander II and compiled by the German ethnographer Gustav-Fedor Pauli, who had immigrated to Russia. Volume 1 of the work consists of 62 colored illustrations, including this photograph, depicting various ethnic groups from across the empire in their traditional attire. The volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and their populations in the cities of the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map indicating the regions inhabited by each group. The Izhorian Finns are depicted here wearing traditional clothing, with the men dressed in long, knee-length coats, woolen trousers, and high leather boots. The women are dressed in long, flowing skirts, often adorned with intricate embroidery, and wear headscarves or bonnets. The Izhorians were known for their skilled craftsmanship, particularly in the production of pottery, textiles, and metalwork. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Izhorian Finns and the broader ethnographic landscape of the Russian Empire during the mid-19th century.
