EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Henry Cromwell, the youngest son of Oliver Cromwell, who was born in 1627 or 1628 and passed away in 1673 or 1674. The image is taken from "Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second," published in London in 1815 by Samuel Woodburn. Henry Cromwell is shown wearing the fashionable attire of the 17th century, with a high-collared shirt, a doublet, and breeches. His military background is evident from the sword at his side, reflecting his role as a soldier during the English Civil War. Henry's father, Oliver Cromwell, rose to prominence as a Parliamentarian leader during the English Civil Wars, eventually becoming Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1653 until his death in 1658. Henry Cromwell received an education that prepared him for a career in politics and the military. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and was a member of the English Parliament. During the Second English Civil War, he led the Parliamentarian forces in Ireland and was instrumental in the defeat of the Royalist forces. The portrait was created in black and white, reflecting the artistic style of the time. It is currently housed in the Trinity College Dublin, formerly known as the University of Dublin, and is a valuable addition to the institution's collection of historical art and artifacts.
