Christmas Crane JLP01_11_40966_10

LONDON METROPOLE HOTEL, EDGWARE ROAD, CITY OF WESTMINSTER, GREATER LONDON. Laings winning entry to the Financial Times Christmas Crane Competition at the Metropole Hotel, London.
The team were given short notice that the crane at the Metropole site had been selected as Laings entry for the competition, only finding out on 21st November. EPL, Laing Plcs plant operation, came up with a design and it was fabricated by Jack Caseys group in St. Neots. Bill MacDermott, EPLs Electrical Design Manager, designed the electrical circuitry at his dining room table in an afternoon. The reindeers legs and Father Christmas arm was made to appear to move and the whole display took more than 2, 400 bulbs. Laing won the competition again the following year with a crane at the Vauxhall Cross site.
A date of 4th November is given on the negative register but the story in the Jan 1990 issue of Team Spirit, Laings company newsletter, suggests this is too early

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting Christmas Crane at the London Metropole Hotel in City of Westminster, Greater London. Laings, a renowned construction company, entered this magnificent crane into the Financial Times Christmas Crane Competition and emerged as winners. The team received short notice about their selection on 21st November and swiftly began working on an extraordinary design. EPL, Laing Plcs plant operation, collaborated with Jack Caseys group in St. Neots to fabricate this masterpiece. Bill MacDermott, EPLs Electrical Design Manager, showcased his exceptional talent by designing the intricate electrical circuitry for this display at his dining room table within a single afternoon. The mesmerizing movement of reindeer legs and Father Christmas' arm was brought to life using over 2,400 bulbs that illuminated the night scene with a dazzling sparkle. Although the negative register suggests a date of 4th November for this photograph, it is believed to be too early based on information from Team Spirit - Laings company newsletter published in January 1990. Laing's triumph didn't end here; they went on to win the competition again next year with another spectacular crane at Vauxhall Cross site. This print serves as a testament to their innovative spirit and commitment to spreading festive joy through breathtaking displays during Christmastime.
