EDITORS COMMENTS
Lady Ejima and the Actor Ikushima Shingoro" is a captivating woodblock print created by the renowned Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in 1886. This diptych, part of the artist's "A New Selection of Eastern Brocade Pictures," tells a timeless love story set against the backdrop of the Meiji Era (1868-1912) in Japan. The print depicts Lady Ejima, an aristocratic noblewoman, standing at the entrance of Chiyoda Castle, clad in an elegant kimono adorned with intricate patterns. Her long, flowing sleeves are pushed up, revealing her delicate wrists as she gazes longingly towards the fortifications of Edo Castle in the distance. The closed gates and fortifications of both castles symbolize the barriers that keep the lovers apart. On the other panel, Ikushima Shingoro, a renowned kabuki actor, is shown wearing a vibrant, colorful costume, his makeup and expressive facial features highlighting his dramatic role. He stands at the entrance of Oku, a building within Edo Castle, also gazing towards Chiyoda Castle, yearning for Lady Ejima's presence. The legend of Lady Ejima and Ikushima Shingoro is a romantic tale of forbidden love. During the Edo Period, a curfew was enforced, preventing commoners from being out after dark. Ikushima Shingoro, a humble actor, and Lady Ejima, a noblewoman, could only meet in secret, often exchanging glances from their respective castles. Their love story, filled with longing and desire, is immortalized in this stunning woodblock print. This masterpiece, with its rich colors and intricate details, is a testament to the artistic heritage of Japan during the Meiji Era. It is now part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to captivate audiences and inspire admiration for the enduring power of love and the artistry of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi.
