Winchester Butter Cross BB57_00126
BUTTER CROSS, HIGH STREET, WINCHESTER, HAMPSHIRE. View of the Butter Cross, previously known as the City Cross, on the High Street, with Allens Confectionery and the Norman Palace Tea Rooms surrounding it.
View of the Butter Cross on the High Street, in front of Allens Confectionery shop on the Pentice, and with the Norman Palace Tea Room to the right of the cross. The cross is an early 15th century cross with mulitple pinnacles and statuettes in a small alcove. The cross is on a five-step base, of which the top step is as tall as the pedestrians in the image. Because of this the whole cross is not seen in full. There are predestrians walking on the High Street and a partial view of a post box on the far left. This photograph, taken by E M Booty for Historic England, showcases the historic Butter Cross on Winchester's High Street. Dating back to the early 15th century, the Butter Cross, formerly known as the City Cross, stands proudly amidst the hustle and bustle of modern-day life. Surrounded by the charming Allens Confectionery shop on the Pentice and the Norman Palace Tea Rooms, the cross is a testament to Winchester's rich history. The cross, adorned with multiple pinnacles and statuettes in a small alcove, sits atop a five-step base. The top step, towering over the pedestrians in the image, only reveals a partial view of the cross. The intricate details of the cross, including its gothic architecture and ornate decorations, are a sight to behold. The High Street, lined with shops and bustling with people, forms the backdrop to this image. A post box on the far left adds a modern touch to the scene, reminding us that history and the present day coexist in this beautiful English town. The Butter Cross, a cherished symbol of Winchester's heritage, continues to stand tall and proud, inviting visitors to explore the town's fascinating past.
