EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment during Operation Rich Man at Coventry Cathedral in the 1960s. The image showcases a remarkable feat of engineering as a RAF Belvedere helicopter gracefully lowers an impressive 80ft bronze spire onto the roof of the cathedral on Priory Street, Coventry. Operation Rich Man was a collaborative effort between Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff, aiming to complete the construction of the new cathedral. This particular task involved using the helicopter to hoist and carefully position the massive spire onto its designated spot. However, Mother Nature had other plans for this ambitious operation. Due to windy conditions, there was a temporary setback in lowering the 1/2 ton cross that crowns the top of the spire. Nonetheless, this photograph immortalizes an awe-inspiring moment showcasing human ingenuity and determination amidst challenging circumstances. The image not only highlights architectural marvel but also pays tribute to those who worked tirelessly behind-the-scenes to bring this project to fruition. It serves as a testament to both teamwork and innovation within construction sites. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive, this print offers us a glimpse into history while reminding us of our ability to overcome obstacles in pursuit of greatness.
