COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. A close-up of Geoffrey Clarkes 12-foot aluminium sculpture of a winged cross, seen during the operation to lower it on to the 80ft bronze spire of Coventry Cathedral.
The photograph was taken during Operation Rich Man a joint project involving Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff. This involved a RAF Belvedere helicopter hoisting in to place the 80ft bronze spire on to the new cathedral. The part of the operation to lower the 1/2 ton cross that sits on top of the spire had to be postponed due to windy conditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment during the construction of Coventry Cathedral in the 1960s. The image showcases a close-up view of Geoffrey Clarke's magnificent 12-foot aluminium sculpture, a winged cross, as it is being lowered onto the impressive 80ft bronze spire. The photo was taken during Operation Rich Man, an extraordinary joint project involving Royal Air Force personnel and Laing staff. This ambitious endeavor aimed to hoist the massive bronze spire onto the cathedral using an RAF Belvedere helicopter. However, due to unfavorable weather conditions, specifically strong winds, the operation had to be temporarily postponed. Despite this setback, one cannot help but marvel at the intricate design and craftsmanship of both the sculpture and spire depicted in this image. The soaring wings of the cross symbolize hope and spirituality while adding a touch of ethereal beauty to Coventry's skyline. This historic snapshot not only documents an important milestone in Coventry Cathedral's construction but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration between different sectors. It stands as a reminder that even amidst challenges and setbacks, determination can lead us towards achieving remarkable feats in art, architecture, and beyond.
