COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. A view looking north from the roof of Coventry Cathedral, showing a RAF Belvedere helicopter attempting to hoist the 80ft bronze spire for the new cathedral from a scaffolding tower on site, with the city of Coventry in the background including the bus station and The Coventry Theatre
The photograph was taken during Operation Rich Man a joint project involving Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff. This involved a RAF Belvedere helicopter hoisting in to place the 80ft bronze spire on to the new cathedral. The part of the operation to lower the 1/2 ton cross that sits on top of the spire had to be postponed due to windy conditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment during Operation Rich Man at Coventry Cathedral in the 1960s. From the vantage point of the cathedral's roof, we are presented with a breathtaking view looking north towards the city of Coventry. In this remarkable scene, an RAF Belvedere helicopter can be seen attempting to hoist an impressive 80ft bronze spire from a scaffolding tower on site. The joint project between Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff aimed to place this monumental spire atop the new cathedral, symbolizing hope and resilience after World War II had devastated much of Coventry. The photograph showcases not only the dedication and precision required for such an ambitious construction endeavor but also highlights the collaboration between different entities. While capturing this awe-inspiring moment, it is impossible to ignore other significant landmarks in the background. The bustling bus station and The Coventry Theatre serve as reminders of everyday life amidst grand architectural aspirations. Unfortunately, due to windy conditions, part of Operation Rich Man had to be postponed—the lowering of a half-ton cross that would crown the spire. Nonetheless, this image stands as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in rebuilding one's spirit through physical structures that inspire generations to come. Photographed by A© Historic England Archive, this snapshot immortalizes both history in motion and architectural triumphs against adversity.
