Operation Rich Man JLP01_08_062432
COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. Looking up at a RAF Belvedere helicopter in the process of lowering the 80ft bronze spire on to the roof of Coventry Cathedral.
The photograph was taken during Operation Rich Man a joint project involving Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff. This involved a RAF Belvedere helicopter hoisting in to place the 80ft bronze spire on to the new cathedral. The part of the operation to lower the 1/2 ton cross that sits on top of the spire had to be postponed due to windy conditions. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment during Operation Rich Man at Coventry Cathedral. The viewer is transported back to the 1960s, where they find themselves gazing up at the magnificent sight of an RAF Belvedere helicopter in action. Suspended from its powerful rotor blades is an 80ft bronze spire, delicately being lowered onto the roof of the cathedral. The joint effort between Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff is evident in this image, showcasing their collaboration on this ambitious project. This operation aimed to place the impressive spire atop the newly constructed cathedral, symbolizing resilience and hope. However, nature had other plans that day as windy conditions forced a postponement of lowering the 1/2 ton cross that crowns the spire. Nevertheless, this photograph immortalizes a significant milestone in Coventry's history. The construction site surrounding Coventry Cathedral provides context for this awe-inspiring scene. The juxtaposition of modern aircraft technology against traditional architecture emphasizes progress while honoring heritage. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive, this print invites viewers to marvel at both human ingenuity and natural forces beyond our control. It serves as a testament to teamwork and determination in achieving monumental feats that will forever be etched into history books.
