Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). Sedentary Koryaks - Reindeer Herders of Eastern Siberia, 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Sedentary Koryaks," is an ethnographic record of the Koryak people, a reindeer-herding community residing in the easternmost region of Siberia. The photograph is taken from Sheet 58 of the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," published in Saint Petersburg in 1862. The album, a two-volume work dedicated to Tsar Alexander II, was created by the German ethnographer Gustav-Fedor Pauli, who had immigrated to Russia. The first volume of the work consists of 62 colored illustrations, each depicting various ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional attire. This volume also includes a fold-out table detailing the size of the populations of these groups in the cities of the empire and a colored-coded ethnographic map. In this image, a group of Sedentary Koryaks are shown in their traditional dwellings, surrounded by their reindeer. The Sedentary Koryaks were one of the two main subgroups of the Koryak people, the other being the Nomadic Koryaks. While the Nomadic Koryaks roamed the tundra with their herds, the Sedentary Koryaks lived in more permanent settlements near the coast. The Sedentary Koryaks are dressed in fur clothing, with the women wearing long, hooded parkas and the men wearing short jackets and trousers. They are shown in various activities, including preparing food, mending nets, and caring for their reindeer. The reindeer, an essential part of their livelihood, are tethered near their dwellings. This photograph is a valuable historical record of the Sedentary Koryaks and their way of life, providing insight into the traditional culture and customs of this indigenous community of eastern Siberia during the mid-19th century.
