"The Land of Egypt", by Frank Dillon, in the Exhibition of the British Institution, 1862. Engraving of a painting. The twin Colossi of the Plain of Goorna were among the last of the stupendous remains of ancient Egyptian art at which his Royal Highness [the Prince of Wales] arrived on his journey up the river [Nile]. One of these gigantic statues (that farthest from the spectator...) being the famous vocal Memnon was an object of curiosity and wonder to the ancients...Mr. Dillon has given an effect of earliest morning, judging from the long shadows, the direction of the rays, and the activity of the fellah at the plough, and the reapers; and sunrise was the time when the statue was said to emit the vocal sounds'. The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III, which stand at the front of the ruined Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III, the largest temple in the Theban Necropolis. The statues, which have stood since 1350 BC, were erroneously thought to represent the Greek mythological king Memnon. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

The Land of Egypt,
EDITORS COMMENTS
a captivating painting by Frank Dillon, was showcased in the prestigious Exhibition of the British Institution in 1862. This enchanting work of art, depicted in an intricately crafted engraving by Mason Jackson, transports us back in time to the ancient land of the Pharaohs. The painting focuses on the legendary Colossi of Memnon, located on the west bank of the Nile River in Thebes. These colossal statues, each over 18 meters high, represent Pharaoh Amenhotep III and have stood proudly since 1350 BC. The closer statue, with its serene expression, gazes towards the east, while the farther one, the more famous one, is known as the vocal Memnon. The scene unfolds as the Prince of Wales approaches these ancient wonders, with the first light of dawn breaking over the landscape. The long shadows, the direction of the sunlight, and the activities of the Egyptian farmers at work - plowing and reaping - all suggest the early hours of the morning. It was believed that at sunrise, the vocal Memnon statue would emit mysterious vocal sounds, a phenomenon that intrigued the ancients and modern visitors alike. Dillon's masterful brushstrokes evoke a sense of awe and wonder, capturing the essence of the mystical land of Egypt and its rich history. The painting offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when the Colossi of Memnon stood not just as symbols of ancient Egyptian art, but as enigmatic and powerful beings that inspired curiosity and reverence.
