EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by S. Leitner jun. after an original illustration by Georg Wolfgang Knorr, showcases three captivating avian species from the Old World and the New. At the center, the regal King Bird-of-Paradise (Cicinnurus regius), also known as Le petit oiseau de Paradis, proudly displays its vibrant plumage and distinctive elongated, wired headfeathers. The King Bird-of-Paradise is native to New Guinea and is renowned for its elaborate courtship displays. To the left, two Suriname Hummingbirds (species unknown) gracefully perch, their iridescent feathers shimmering in the light. Hummingbirds are renowned for their unique ability to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings, and the Suriname Hummingbirds are no exception. These tiny, colorful birds are native to South America, particularly in the countries of Suriname and French Guiana. This stunning artwork is taken from the Deliciae Naturae Selectae, or "Select Rarities of Nature," published by Blusse and Son in Nuremberg in 1771. The King Bird-of-Paradise specimen is from the collection of Johann Philipp Breyns, while the Suriname Hummingbirds are from the Museo Societatis physicae gedanensis. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this engraving serve as a testament to the skill and artistry of the time, providing a glimpse into the natural world as it was understood over two centuries ago.
