Budding HIV particles, TEM C018 / 0127

Budding HIV particles. Coloured transmision electron micrograph (TEM) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) particles (orange) budding from the surface of a T lymphocyte (brown) from the H9 cell line. HIV attacks CD4+ T-lymphocytes, white blood cells, a crucial part of the bodys immune system. It enters the cell, hijacks the cells machinery to make more copies of the virus, and the new virus particles then burst from the membrane of the cell, killing it. This severely weakens the immune system, causing AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). The disease makes the patient susceptible to diseases that would otherwise be harmless. Magnification: x20, 000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of HIV particles, captured through a transmission electron microscope. The image reveals the vibrant orange-colored HIV particles budding from the surface of a T lymphocyte, which is depicted in brown. These tiny viruses pose a significant threat to our immune system as they specifically target CD4+ T-lymphocytes, crucial white blood cells responsible for defending our bodies against infections. Upon entering the cell, HIV manipulates its machinery to replicate itself and produce more copies of the virus. Eventually, these new viral particles burst out from the cell membrane, leading to its demise. This destructive process severely weakens our immune system and ultimately results in AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). As a consequence, individuals with AIDS become highly susceptible to diseases that would otherwise be harmless. With an impressive magnification level of x20,000 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this photograph provides us with an up-close look at these infectious agents. Its black background enhances the visual impact while emphasizing their biological significance. This stunning image serves as a powerful reminder of both the complexity and devastation caused by HIV infection. It highlights the urgent need for continued research and medical advancements in combating this retrovirus and finding effective treatments or preventive measures against it.
