1888 colour lithograph of Jurassic

Vivid colour lithograph for " Dr. Schuberts Naturgeschichte - Geologie, Mineralreich, Palaontologie". Published in Stuttgart by J.F. Shreiber. The palaeontology section by Dr. Friedrich Rolle. German lithographers dominated colour lithography with their high volume productions such as this book for Children. The late Jurassic Solnhofen limestones used to lithograph these German prints sometimes contained finely preserved fossils of the very epoch they illustrated. Note, for example, Archaeopteryx in the sky above - itself discovered in Solnhofen. Also featured are Rhamphorhynchus (5) Pterodactylus (4) Plesiosaurus (2) Teleosaurus (3) Ichthyosaurus. Note that earlier mistakes such as the fin outline of ichthyosaur are still perpetuated

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 1888 colour lithograph captures the vivid world of Jurassic creatures in breathtaking detail. Published as part of "Dr. Schuberts Naturgeschichte - Geologie, Mineralreich, Palaontologie" by J. F. Shreiber in Stuttgart, this print exemplifies the mastery of German lithographers during that era. The use of late Jurassic Solnhofen limestones to create these prints is particularly fascinating, as these rocks often contained exquisitely preserved fossils from the very epoch they depict. Look closely and you'll spot Archaeopteryx soaring through the sky above – a remarkable creature itself discovered in Solnhofen. Other prehistoric inhabitants showcased here include Rhamphorhynchus (5), Pterodactylus (4), Plesiosaurus (2), Teleosaurus (3), and Ichthyosaurus. It's worth noting that some earlier inaccuracies persist, such as the fin outline on the ichthyosaur. This panorama offers not only an educational glimpse into Earth's ancient past but also showcases the artistic prowess involved in creating such intricate reconstructions. Driven by their high-volume productions for children like this book, German lithographers dominated colour lithography at that time. Paul D. Stewart expertly captures every minute detail and vibrant coloration present in this artwork with his photography skills. This mesmerizing print serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic expression within paleontology – a true masterpiece from Science Photo Library.
