On 26th July, 1830, the Polignac ministry, strongly reactionary in its tendencies, published ordinances suppressing the liberty of the press and creating a new system of elections. The result was an insurrection during the three days 27th-29th July by which Charles X was overthrown and Louis Philippe of Orleans proclaimed king on 9th August, 1830. During the last days of Charles Xs reign a French expedition had captured the city of Algiers and laid the foundations of the French colony there

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history - the Algiers and Louis Philippe, French Revolution of 1830. In July 1830, the Polignac ministry's oppressive ordinances ignited an insurrection that led to the overthrow of Charles X and the proclamation of Louis Philippe as king. Amidst this political turmoil, France had also laid claim to Algiers, establishing its colonial presence. The image exudes a sense of determination and patriotism as men and women stand united against their oppressors. The crowd displays flags proudly, symbolizing their fight for freedom and defending their ideals. Armed with guns and rifles, they confront the invading forces with unwavering resolve. The composition highlights both chaos and order: people are in motion while maintaining a semblance of organization on the road. This juxtaposition reflects the intensity of warfare during this period. In this snapshot from the 19th century, we witness not only a revolution but also a clash between two nations striving for power - France as an invader seeking territorial expansion and Algeria resisting colonization. Through this historical artwork, we glimpse into an era defined by revolutionary spirit, rioting masses yearning for liberty, and individuals willing to sacrifice everything for their beliefs. It serves as a reminder that even in times of great upheaval, unity can be found amongst those fighting for justice.
