Cossacks (Uralka, Ural, Donetsk, Chernomoret), 1862. Sheet 7 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Cossacks (Uralka, Ural, Donetsk, Chernomoret)" by Karlis Huns, is an ethnographic record of a group of Cossacks from various regions of the Russian Empire, including Urals, Ural, Donetsk, and Chernomoret. The image is part of the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," published in Saint Petersburg in 1862, marking the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire. The album was dedicated to Tsar Alexander II and was the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli, a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia. The album consisted of two volumes. The first volume contained 62 colored illustrations, including this photograph, depicting the traditional dress of various ethnic groups from across the empire. The volume also included a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that showed which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. The second volume was all text and consisted of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth. This photograph captures the Cossacks in their traditional attire, displaying their unique identity as a distinct group within the Russian Empire. The Cossacks were a military and social class of self-governing frontier settlers, who played a vital role in the expansion of the Russian Empire. Their history and culture were shaped by their military service, their settlements along the rivers and waterways, and their self-governance. This photograph is an important historical record of the Cossacks and their way of life during the mid-19th century.
