Letter from Charles James Fox to his Aunt Emily, 21st October 1798. Artist: Charles James Fox

Letter from Charles James Fox to his Aunt Emily, 21st October 1798. Letter written from Holkham by Charles James Fox to his aunt, Emily, Duchess of Leinster, relative to her intended letter and petition to the king (George III) against the attainder of her son, Lord Edward Fitzgerald. Lord Edward had died in confinement at Dublin on 6th June, 1798, of wounds recieved in resisting arrest on a charge of high treason. A bill for his attainder passed the Irish House of Lords in September, and was sent to England for the royal assent. His mothers letter and petition against it (printed in Thomas Moores Life and Death of Lord E. Fitzgerald, 1831, vol. ii, p. 269) were presented to the king by her brother, the Duke of Richmond, on 24th October, but without effect. The attainder was, however, reversed in 1819. From the third series of Facsimiles of royal, historical, literary and other autographs in the Department of Manuscripts, British Museum: Series I-V, (London, 1899)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant historical artifact - a letter written by Charles James Fox to his Aunt Emily, Duchess of Leinster, on the 21st of October 1798. The letter was penned from Holkham and discusses Aunt Emily's intended letter and petition to King George III against the attainder of her son, Lord Edward Fitzgerald. Lord Edward Fitzgerald tragically lost his life while in confinement at Dublin on June 6th, 1798. He had been charged with high treason and succumbed to wounds sustained during his resistance against arrest. In September of that year, the Irish House of Lords passed a bill for his attainder which was subsequently sent to England for royal assent. Aunt Emily's heartfelt plea and petition were presented to the king by her brother, the Duke of Richmond, on October 24th. Unfortunately, their efforts did not yield the desired outcome as they failed to sway King George III's decision. However, justice prevailed years later when Lord Edward Fitzgerald's attainder was reversed in 1819. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the enduring love between family members and their unwavering commitment towards seeking justice for their loved ones. It also highlights an important chapter in British history where political turmoil intersected with personal tragedy.
