EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire. Through a triptych of arches in the foreground, we are granted a mesmerizing view of the abbey ruins. The arches, crafted from damaged freestone at their summits, provide a stunning frame for the low stone walls that lie directly behind them. As our gaze extends into the background, rows upon rows of arches come into focus, both parallel and perpendicular to our vantage point. These architectural marvels stand as testaments to the skill and craftsmanship that went into constructing this medieval masterpiece. Founded in 1132 by Cistercian monks, Fountains Abbey is hailed as one of the best-preserved abbeys in existence today. Its main building underwent construction between 1170 and 1247 before witnessing further additions during the late 15th century and early 16th century. Having changed hands numerous times after its dissolution, Fountains Abbey now finds itself under the ownership of the National Trust. This picturesque site not only showcases its rich history but also stands as a symbol of tranquility amidst nature's embrace. Elegantly captured by E M Booty for Historic England, this print serves as a reminder of humanity's ability to create enduring beauty even within ancient ruins.
