Castle Frome font BB49_00388
ST MICHAELS CHURCH, CASTLE FROME, CASTLE FROME, HEREFORDSHIRE. Detail of a Norman font with three feet carved as prostrating figures, with a focus on two figures and animal carvings, in St Michaels Church.
The image shows the full height of the font which has a round bowl on a cylindrical shaft which is possibly made of one piece of stone. Two of the carved feet are visible, including the figure with a damaged head, and one intact. Above the feet is an interlacing pattern around the shaft which changes to carvings of figures and animals. There are two birds facing each other in the centre of the bowl, and a partial view of a scene on the left side. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the exquisite beauty of the Castle Frome font, located in St Michaels Church in Castle Frome, Herefordshire. The font, dating back to the Norman era, is a remarkable example of medieval craftsmanship. The image showcases the full height of the font, revealing its round bowl resting on a cylindrical shaft. It is believed that this shaft was carved from a single piece of stone. What truly sets this font apart are its intricately carved feet depicting prostrating figures. Two of these feet are prominently displayed in the photograph - one intact and another with a damaged head. Above the feet, an interlacing pattern gracefully wraps around the shaft before transitioning into carvings of various figures and animals. In particular, two birds facing each other catch our attention at the center of the bowl. While only a partial view is visible in this shot, it hints at an intriguing scene depicted on the left side. E M Booty skillfully captured every minute detail and texture present on this historic masterpiece through their lens. This print not only serves as a visual delight but also offers us an opportunity to appreciate and admire medieval artistry at its finest.
