Swimbridge Font a62_07338
ST JAMES CHURCH, SWIMBRIDGE, NORTH DEVON. Detail of the font in the nave of St James Church, showing the lead-lined bowl and wooden case with doors over the font and canopy.
Detail of a lead-lined Renaissance font with wooden casing that resembles a pulpit. The font has three tiers, each of which are panelled. The lower tier has plain panels, while the middle tier has decorated panels, of which some hinge open to reveal to top of the font, as seen in the image. The top panels are also plain, but are topped with pinnacles. Above this is an open crown over and a large rectangular canopy. In the background is a chancel screen which crosses the church and was restored in 1880, and above this is an angel statuette on a wooden bar across the church. In the foreground are the ends of pews with Renaissance style carvings. Historic England is the public body that champions and protects England's historic places. © Historic England Archive

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the exquisite details of Swimbridge Font in St James Church, located in the picturesque village of Swimbridge, North Devon. The font, dating back to the Renaissance period, is a true masterpiece with its lead-lined bowl and unique wooden casing resembling a pulpit. The font consists of three tiers, each adorned with beautifully panelled designs. The lower tier features plain panels while the middle tier showcases intricately decorated ones that can be opened to reveal the top part of the font. This particular detail is wonderfully captured in this image. Topping off the font are plain panels embellished with elegant pinnacles and an open crown above them. A large rectangular canopy completes this remarkable structure. In addition to showcasing this magnificent font, other elements within St James Church are also visible in the background. A restored chancel screen from 1880 stretches across the church while an angel statuette gracefully perches on a wooden bar above it. Furthermore, Renaissance-style carvings adorn the ends of pews in striking fashion. E M Booty's skillful photography allows us to appreciate not only these architectural wonders but also their historical significance as part of Swimbridge's medieval parish church.
