MAYDAY HOSPITAL, LONDON ROAD, WEST THORNTON, CROYDON, GREATER LONDON. Denis Sweaney, Chairman of Croydon Area Health Authority, and Sisters Parvez smoothing the final batch of concrete during the topping out of the services block at Mayday Hospital.
Laings Southern Region was awarded the contract for the first phase of a multi-million pound five phase redevelopment project at Mayday Hospital. The contract included a new three storey surgical block with a linked service block, which was to be connected to the main hospital complex by bridge. The topping out of the services block at Mayday Hospital was aptly held on May Day. During the ceremony, an engraved silver trowel was presented to Denis Sweaney by Frank Bryer, joint managing director of the Construction Company. The occasion was also marked by the publication of Template ; the first in a series of printed information leaflets by the commissioning team, which described the topping out ceremony and provided a floor by floor diagram of the new facilities. This print captures a significant moment in the history of Mayday Hospital, located on London Road in West Thornton, Croydon. The image showcases the topping out ceremony of the services block, marking an important milestone in the first phase of a multi-million pound redevelopment project undertaken by Laings Southern Region. In this photograph, we see Denis Sweaney, Chairman of Croydon Area Health Authority, and Sisters Parvez meticulously smoothing the final batch of concrete during the ceremony. Their dedication and attention to detail symbolize the commitment towards delivering exceptional healthcare facilities for the community. The topping out ceremony was held on May Day itself, adding an extra layer of symbolism to this auspicious occasion. To commemorate this event, Frank Bryer, joint managing director of the Construction Company responsible for this project presented Denis Sweaney with an engraved silver trowel as a token of appreciation. Notably, alongside this celebration was also marked by another significant development -the publication of Template; which is part one in a series of printed information leaflets created by the commissioning team. This informative booklet not only described every aspect related to the topping out ceremony but also provided readers with detailed floor-by-floor diagrams showcasing all-new state-of-the-art facilities that would soon be available at Mayday Hospital. Preserved within A© Historic England Archive's collection and captured by Joh (surname unknown), this print serves as a testament to both architectural achievement and collaborative efforts dedicated to enhancing healthcare infrastructure for Greater London residents.
