Craigshill, Livingston, West Lothian, SCOTLAND. A team of Laing workers lowering a prefabricated concrete staircase into position at a Jespersen construction compound, probably at the Craigshill development in Livingston.
In 1963, John Laing and Son Ltd bought the rights to the Danish industrialised building system known as Jespersen (sometimes referred to as Jesperson). The company built factories in Scotland, Hampshire and Lancashire producing Jespersen prefabricated parts and precast concrete panels, allowing the building of housing to be rationalised, saving time and money. The location of this construction compound is uncertain, but it may have been at Craigshill in Livingston where there was a Jesperson Factory and a housing scheme built using the 12M Jespersen System

1960s Construction Housing Estate People Staircase Work

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction industry during the 1960s. The image showcases a team of dedicated Laing workers meticulously lowering a prefabricated concrete staircase into position at a Jespersen construction compound, possibly located at the Craigshill development in Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland. In 1963, John Laing and Son Ltd acquired the rights to Jespersen, an innovative Danish industrialized building system. This acquisition led to the establishment of factories in Scotland, Hampshire, and Lancashire that produced Jespersen prefabricated parts and precast concrete panels. These advancements revolutionized housing construction by streamlining processes and reducing costs. The exact location of this particular construction compound remains uncertain; however, it is believed to be associated with the Craigshill housing scheme where both a Jesperson Factory and homes built using the 12M Jespersen System were present. This photograph not only highlights the hard work and expertise of these skilled workers but also serves as a testament to how architectural innovation can shape communities for generations to come. It provides us with a glimpse into an era when modern techniques were embraced to create efficient living spaces while preserving quality craftsmanship. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this image stands as an enduring reminder of our rich industrial heritage and serves as inspiration for future advancements in sustainable building practices.
