Borough General Hospital, Tremona Road, Shirley Warren, City of Southampton. Nurses posed by a van of the mobile infant welfare unit at Borough General Hospital.
In January 1942 the mobile infant welfare unit was presented to the Ministry of Health by Boots, who also maintained and staffed the unit. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing the mobile infant welfare unit at Borough General Hospital in Southampton during World War II. The dedicated nurses are proudly posed by the van, which served as a lifeline for child welfare services in areas affected by air raids and bombing. In January 1942, Boots generously presented this invaluable mobile unit to the Ministry of Health. Not only did they provide the vehicle, but they also maintained and staffed it with compassionate professionals. Southampton and Portsmouth were fortunate enough to benefit from its services. The photograph transports us back to a time when healthcare was challenged by war's devastating impact. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and resourcefulness displayed during those difficult years. The nurses' uniforms symbolize their commitment to caring for others amidst chaos and uncertainty. Their dedication shines through their poses, reflecting both pride in their work and hope for brighter days ahead. Norman Kingsley Harrison expertly captured this poignant scene, preserving an important chapter in our collective memory. This image stands as a testament to the strength of community spirit and highlights how even during times of crisis, essential services like healthcare continue to be provided with unwavering determination.
